Save Lanikai from CRB

The "Save Lanikai" Program

Lanikai resident John Lindelow first sounded the alarm about CRB in Lanikai in August 2025, before there was any visible CRB damage. He sent a postcard to all Lanikai residents and started the website SaveLanikai.com.

Since then, many Lanikai community members have stepped forward with organizational skills and a desire to help the community. A small core of members initiated a "Save Lanikai" program that will unfold in the first quarter of 2026.

The Lanikai Association is fully behind the Save Lanikai program and provides support in the form of communication with Lanikai Association members, use of facilities, assistance with the production of materials, and general guidance. As a result of funding from an anonymous Lanikai donor, Save Lanikai is offering the following free of charge to Lanikai residents:

• Consultation and guidance
• Tree protection technologies including "wax cups" and "bow tie" nets [these you would normally give to your tree trimmers to place in the crowns]
• Netting for piles of green waste
• Assistance with the removal of CRB breeding materials (any organic debris)

"Save Lanikai" Goals for Phase 1

• Creation and mailing of postcard to Lanikai residents
• Creation and production of Lanikai-specific CRB brochure for door-to-door campaign
• Enlistment of at least 20 volunteers
• Creation of job descriptions and scripts for volunteers
• Regular meetings of volunteers at Lanikai Park
• Knock on doors of half the residences in Lanikai (about 375 of 750)
• Email our Lanikai contact list at least once/month with updates
• Create an online database of properties in Lanikai that campaigners can update using their phones after a visit
• Production and distribution of essential oil wax cups for 500 trees (7500 wax cups at 15/tree)
• Production and distribution of 7500 bow tie nets for 500 trees (these are largely reusable)
• Distribution and application of netting for green waste piles that can’t easily be moved
• Distribution and application of the fungus M. Anisopliae on areas with CRB Breeding Material that can't be easily moved
• Removal of CRB Breeding Material from dozens of properties
• Production and distribution of 100 CRB traps

Lanikai Volunteer Roles

• Canvassers: going door-to-door in Lanikai with brochures to educate and to determine needs (protective measures, mulch treatment or removal); updating database; following up
• Production of wax cups
• Production of bow tie nets (perfect for a school project)
• Distribution of wax cups and bow tie nets to tree trimmers, landscapers, etc.
• Production, distribution, and monitoring of CRB traps
• Assisting residents in removing CRB Breeding Material (pickup trucks!)
